Hair Loss and Teenagers – What Role Do You Play?
Because of my role (as a distributor of Volluma) I try to keep up on blog posts, forums, articles, press releases and other sources of information about male pattern baldness and thinning hair. And one thing has been bothering me a lot lately. It’s the number of negative comments I keep reading from teens and young men who are experiencing receding hairlines at exceptionally young ages.
You may have seen a few of these posts yourself. But were you as astonished as I was to learn how many young men are depressed, have become anti-social, and even considered suicide because of their hair?
Dealing with male pattern baldness is not for the weak. It’s tough. You feel like that’s what people are focused on. It’s difficult to talk to beautiful women because you’re afraid of being rejected. And you hate to look in the mirror because you remember what you used to look like with hair. Now imagine having those same feelings as an insecure teenage boy.
Whether you realize it or not, you could serve as a source of inspiration for young men dealing with baldness. You can be someone who helps them through their challenges – instead of letting them cope on their own. If you’re willing, you could be exactly the type of help a young man needs. So how do you help young men dealing with baldness or thinning hair? Here are some ideas:
Keep a Sense of Humor – you really can choose the way people remember you. When they’re having a conversation with someone else, do they refer to you as: the bald guy, the rude guy, the shy guy, or the funny guy? If baldness is not the trait you want noticed first, then replace it with another. Being funny is a great way to go. And young men who see you can start relating fun, enjoyable, and friendly to baldness.
Never Put Yourself Down – this is not to say you’re not going to have your moments when a negative thought runs through your head. But you don’t have to speak those thoughts out loud. Even self-deprecation to get a laugh can cause unstable young men to perceive baldness as a misfortune.
Express Gratitude Frequently – gracious people are always much more fun to be around. If you are always interacting with people in a positive way, that positivity will rub off. And expressing what your grateful for may help young men think about the good things in their lives.
Be a Success – you don’t have to make a million dollars or become a celebrity. But find something that you enjoy and become super successful at it. For example, if you like to sing, practice singing until others beg you to sing at their events or in church. Helping young men realize that you can achieve great things will help them focus their energies on something other than their appearance.
No matter what you feel like inside, the best thing you can do for those around you is to stay focused on the great things in life. Those things that bother us the most can really drag us down if we let them. A lot of young men haven’t learned the skill of “moving on” and they need someone to show them the way.
My goal is to help as many men feel great about themselves as possible – which is why I got involved with Volluma. But I hope you’ll take on this special challenge and help the struggling young men around you remember they can always look good and feel great no matter what nature throws at them.
